8/6 ::: SATURDAY.  As usual, I arrived at Central Park at 7am for the early morning Saturday long run with the team.  However, this time, I BARELY made it through the first five miles.  With my stomach still full from a post-sundown Ramadan feast the night before, I was extremely sluggish and convinced that there was no way I could make it through the scheduled mileage.  I thought about quitting at each turn, but somehow stuck it out and finally hit a stride on mile 7, which allowed me to push through and finish.  The run was a real exercise in mental endurance and it reminded me that the marathon is largely mind over matter (with the proper training for your body, of course).  Visualization and conscious intention are real and, as each day of training goes by, my mind and body are reaching new limits.  Countdown to 26.2!!!!!

Marathon Training + Ramadan = YIKES!!!

Help me reach my goal!

In order to run with Team for Kids, I have to meet a fundraising goal of $2,620 by October.  Team for Kids is an incredible organization!  Please help by donating here.

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

CAMELS & SAND DUNES SPOTTED ON MY RUN
Week 5 rolled around and I realized I had planned a trip to Morocco without making any plans to fit in my required mileage (oops! how did that happen?).  Honestly, I was really excited about visiting Morocco for the first time and running was the very last thing on my mind.  Although it was low on my list of things to do, I managed to squeeze in a couple of runs and was glad I did.  My run along the beach in Essaouira ended up being one of the most scenic and breathtaking parts of my trip.  A pleasant and rewarding surprise!

I’m still relatively new to running long distance (anything over 6 miles, in my opinion) so I’ve learned a few lessons the hard way.  For one, I had no idea how important it is to have the right pair of properly fitted, good quality running shoes and some lightweight, moisture absorbing socks.  A quick trip to my neighborhood Jack Rabbit Sports solved that problem.  I’m currently rocking the super light (and cute) New Balance 890’s and an endless supply of Feetures Elite socks.   Needless to say, my feet are now in good shape!  And, I’m also having fun exploring new drinks to stay hydrated and replenished.  My all-time favorite drink is Vita Coco (for the record, I’ve been on Team Vita Coco pre-Rihanna) and my new vice is Zukay’s Beet Ginger Kvass (WARNING: it’s an acquired taste).

A beautiful view and the highlight of one of my favorite runs - from my house in Brooklyn to Brooklyn Bridge Park and back (approx. 8 miles).
